Planning for a Course of Study

Throughout a student’s tenure at Lakeview High School, they meet regularly with their School Counselor to develop and work through an individualized graduation plan that aligns with Region 20 requirements and the student’s postsecondary interests and goals.

The table below outlines the similarities and differences between Region 20 graduation requirements, and the course requirements and recommendations for 4-year colleges and universities in core subject areas. This table can be used to help students map out their 4-year academic plan, and discuss class levels for the next year with teachers and School Counselors.

In addition to considering the required and recommended courses from the subjects listed above, students are able to make informed decisions regarding their program of study based on career exploration and planning exercises and introspective assessments conducted via School Counseling curriculum and in some cases, the special services office.

Although not a graduation requirement, it is highly encouraged that students seek out and complete community service opportunities. This data point is used in many financial aid applications, and is something that colleges/universities will consider in their application process.

Academic Load

To ensure that all students acquire and develop the knowledge and skills required to be productive, empowered, and inspired members of society, it is recommended that students carry seven (7) or more classes per academic semester. See chart below for an explanation of grade level credit expectations:

Academically, Region 20 High School selects programming that will best meet the needs of our students and prepare them for a variety of post secondary opportunities, such as certification and degree programs, the Connecticut or national workforce, or various branches of the military.

The following course summaries, organized by department, intend to ensure all students can:
