School Counseling

The School Counseling Department is available to all students attending Lakeview High School. School counselors support students as they work towards academic, personal/social, and career and college success. Counselors meet with students on an individual basis and in group settings throughout the student’s high school career. Students are assigned to counselors alphabetically by student’s last name, and keep the same counselor through their tenure at Lakeview High School. See below for a more detailed description of specific school counseling practices:

School Counseling Curriculum

School counselors provide structured developmental lessons to all students that address the three primary domains: academic development, career development and personal/social development.

Individual Planning

School counselors help students to assess their abilities, interests and goals as they develop their course of study in alignment with their Individualized Graduation Plan (IGP) as well as support in the development and preparation of their post-secondary plans.

Responsive Services

School counselors provide assistance to the immediate needs and concerns of individual students, sometimes requiring individual or group counseling, information dissemination, crisis intervention, consultation or referral. School counselors only have a duty to inform parents/guardians or the appropriate authority when the student’s condition indicates serious or foreseeable harm to the student or others. This will be done after careful deliberation and, where possible, after consultation with other professionals.

School counselors provide assistance with referrals to in-school and outside agencies as appropriate, in consultation with other student support personnel and school administration.

Systems Support

School counselors work with other educators, parents and the community to support student achievement through a variety of means including participation in student teams (PPTs, 504s) and building level committees, as well as the facilitation of family/community events.
