JUNETEENTH

Sent on behalf of the Academic Office

In May of 2022, the State of Connecticut approved Juneteenth Independence Day (PA 22-128) as a legal state holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the Union army alerted the enslaved people in Galveston, TX to the fact that slavery had ended with the Emancipation Proclamation two and a half years prior.

By law, local school districts in Connecticut may choose to close schools on June 19th or "hold a suitable educational program" in observance of Juneteenth. As Region 6 and Litchfield schools are in session on June 19th, elementary teachers will share a reading of Juneteenth for Mazie by Floyd Cooper with students. Secondary teachers will share the video Google Doodle illustrated by artist Loveis Wise and narrated by actor LeVar Burton.

REMINDER FOR LIS LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

Just a friendly reminder that LIS's last day of school is Monday, June 19.  It is a 12:00 PM dismissal.  Please note that yes, LIS and Center School do have different last days... Center School's last day is June 20.

HELLO SUMMER!

LIS would like to wish everyone a happy and safe summer.  We extend our sincere gratitude to our LIS community for making this school year a sensational one!  We want to wish our 6th graders the best of luck on their journey to LMS.  We look forward to the return of our incoming 6th and 5th graders.  We are also very excited to meet a new 4th-grade class this fall.  Happy summer from LIS!
