Center School Weekly Update

Dear Center School Families,

It was a pleasure to see so many family members here on Thursday for our Summer Kick Off!  The joy and excitement on the children's faces makes everything we do so worthwhile.  Special thanks to our Summer Kick Off committee and our specialists for planning the event.  We will continue to have students choose books to bring home as the year winds down.  These do not need to be returned to school.

A reminder that next week there will be early releases on Thursday and Friday at 12:15.

We will celebrate Flag Day on June 14th.  All students are welcome to wear red, white and blue.  We will be gathering to share patriotic music performed by some of our third graders and singing songs together.  If the weather cooperates and we are able to be outside, families are invited to join us at Center School.  In the event of inclement weather, we will need to move inside and unfortunately are not able to accommodate guests.

In May of 2022, the State of Connecticut approved Juneteenth Independence Day (PA 22-128) as a legal state holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the Union army alerted the enslaved people in Galveston, TX to the fact that slavery had ended with the Emancipation Proclamation two and a half years prior.

By law, local school districts in Connecticut may choose to close schools on June 19th or "hold a suitable educational program" in observance of Juneteenth. As Region 6 and Litchfield schools are in session on June 19th, elementary teachers will share a reading of Juneteenth for Mazie by Floyd Cooper with students. Secondary teachers will share the video Google Doodle illustrated by artist Loveis Wise and narrated by actor LeVar Burton.

From the librarian, Mrs. Betz:

To help aid our students in their reading journey, the district librarians have prepared a website with supporting materials, including reading BINGO cards, fun literacy activities, and events in our libraries and communities. You can find that website here.

Please remember to return any overdue books.  Reminder notices are being sent home today.

Thank you for sharing your child(ren) with us and partnering with us in your child’s education!

Best,

Lisa
